June proved to be a strong month for physical stores in the United States, as they posted total sales showing a decline of just 0.3 percent as measured year-over-year (YoY) for the same time period in 2018, the lowest monthly decrease in over five years. While shopper traffic declined 5.8 percent, strong upticks in both conversion (up 0.3 points) and average transaction value (up 4.7 percent) helped buoy sales, resulting in an increase in shopper yield of 5.9 percent.

With shoppers gearing up for the July 4 holiday, stores performed the best during the last week of the month in advance of the long weekend, posting increases in sales, conversion, ATV, shopper yield and transactions as compared to 2018. The holiday itself delivered a 2.7 percent increase in sales.

While the Independence Day holiday drove the peak week, Father’s Day earlier in the month drove June’s peak days, with Saturday June 15 delivering high water marks for sales, traffic, shopper yield and transactions, and Friday, June 14 setting the monthly high for conversion. As for the corresponding valleys to accompany the peaks, the low days were primarily at the end of the month.

Geographically, regional performance in June as a bit of a tale of two halves. The Northeast and South regions both posted sales increases, 5.6 percent and 0.7 percent respectively, while the Midwest and West regions posted slight decreases in sales of 2.7 percent each. Traffic was down in all regions, while average transaction value and shopper yield was up across the board, with the Northeast reporting a whopping 13.4 percent increase in shopper yield.
